The Little Karoo/Route 62
Route 62 is waiting to be explored…
The name prompts association with the famous Route 66 in the United States – a highway that connects urban and rural communities between Chicago and Los Angeles. And like its namesake it takes you from one adventure to another. From Cape Town, Worcester, Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, all the way to Port Elizabeth – this journey offers more than breathtaking scenery as well as some of South Africa’s finest wines.
Wine route
Known as the longest wine route in the world, Route 62 includes the wine cellars and estates of Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, De Rust and Herold. It is the most diverse wine route in South Africa and results in quality dry wines, fortified wines including world-class Port and Muscadel, and pot-stilled brandies.
Ostriches
These unusual birds can be spotted all along the highway. If you’re the adventurous type, ‘saddle-up’ and take a ride on one of these unique animals.
